Mozart realised he had not yet started writing due to a recently punishing concert schedule…and so decided to re-used a wind serenade he’d written when he was just turned 16. But as a string quintet.
J.Ch.Bach was working late into the night, finishing a quintet ready for the next day’s subscription concert.
Wranitzky was busy studying Haydn’s Creation to care for his own students’ needs. The inspiration was like a constant supply which he could not bear to leave.
A week later, Haydn was trying to remember that fabulous double bass concerto he’d written a year ago but had perished in the fire. All he could remember were the first two bars.
August Lebrun and Franziska Danzi arrived in London for a tour of concerts. Arriving late at night, they were appalled to find that due to a mixup in dates, their lodgings were not going to be ready for at least another day. They would need to find somewhere to sleep for the night…

Just as Istante Collective are embarking on their Tuscan concert tour, there is news of a fifth coronavirus strain…. Taking inspiration from Italo Calvino’s famous novel, we have imagined some possible musical beginnings of our own, based on stories, letters and diaries of our favorite composers. We would love to develop these ideas and tell you stories of composers you have probably never heard of. By the end of our concerts, you might even discover how these stories meet, or pass by each other. Please keep following us – we are so grateful for your support to help us ‘play’ to the end of these stories!
