THREE OBOES IN VIENNA
Music by Beethoven, Went & Wranitzky
for 2 oboes & cor anglais
More info
The peculiar sound of 2 oboes and a cor anglais – a fairly in-extraordinary sight and one of many small wind ensembles in Vienna at the end of the 1700s, is the protagonist of this concert.
Even Beethoven was inspired by this sound combination and wrote for it his Trio op.87. He probably attended a performance of Johan, Philip & Franz Teimer: The 3 (biological) brothers and oboe players working in Vienna around the end of the century. This concert’s performers aren’t biological, but it’s the best we could do…
Programme
-L. V. Beethoven: Trio in C major op87 (Allegro || adagio || scherzo/menuetto || finale presto)
-W. A. Mozart: ‘al desio di chi t’adora’ KV577 [arranged for oboe trio]

WINDS OF VIRTUOSITY
From the eccentric to the bizarre
Sonatas by Zelenka, Fasch, Platti & Schickhardt
More info
In this concert we will pay homage to one of the most eccentric composers of the baroque era: Jan Dismas Zelenka. In 2019 we undertook the adventurous idea of a Zelenka-Music-Marathon based on his 6 sonatas for 2 oboes, bassoon and continuo. Those are really extravagant compositions that push the boundaries of harmony, structure and stamina. Incredibly visionary , they raise the question of how technical instrumental virtuosity needs to be part of the expression/effect of the performance rather than an egocentric demonstration of the performer’s ability. Really ahead of their time! They were clearly written for very skilful musicians of the Dresden’s Court Orchestra, where Zelenka was violone player, and they are still demanding pieces by modern standards. We have included in the program a similar kind of sonata by Fasch and a a ‘quadro sonata’ by Schickhardt where the 2 recorders are added to the band creating an unusual mellow sound. Somehow these are brought together by Purcell’s classic Two in one upon a ground. We have a very good friend joining us from Paris especially for this concert: oboist Yanina Yacubshon a regular player of les Arts Florissant.
Programme
-J. D. Zelenka: Sonata II in G minor for 2 oboes, bassoon and continuo ZWV181 (andante || allegro || andante || allegro)
-H.Purcell: Two upon a ground – from “Diocletian”
-J. F. Fasch: Trio Sonata in B flat for 2 oboes and continuo FaWVN:B2
(andante || allegro || largo || allegro)
-J. Schickhardt: Sonata n.5 in D op.22, for 2 recorders, oboe and continuo (adagio || rigaudon || vivace || gigue)
-J. D. Zelenka – Allegro from Sonata V in F major for 2 oboes, bassoon and continuo ZWV181

LOUD HORNS & SOFT PIPES
Graun and Fasch trios & Purcell’s consort dances
More info
Loud horns and soft pipes are quite simple ideas. Some instruments are definitely loud and others are definitely soft. The landscape changes when we consider a consorts of viols, or recorders. Even more so when you mix loud and soft instruments. Historically, concepts of loud and soft are more related to the musical affect and the theatrical effect we want to produce in front of the audience rather than simply the volume of sound those instruments produce. We have selected works from different corners of the so-called baroque period, from the very soft and intimate to the loud and folky.
Graun and Fasch horn pieces are very rarely performed: the Graun horn trios are a handwritten collection kept in the Akademiska kapellet at the Lund University Library in Sweden, while Fasch’s trio sonata was probably written for the small orchestra of Zerbst where Fasch reluctantly accepted the post of Kapellmeister. Fasch was invited to apply for the position of Thomaskantor in Lipsia, which Bach won as a second choice over Telemann. We know from letters that both Bach and Telemann held Fasch’s music in high esteem. Bach wrote the ‘soft’ sonata that opens cantata BWV192 for Palm Sunday: 22 bars of intimate dialogue between a violin and a recorder over a carpet of string pizzicato.
One piece that definitely deserves some attention is Molter’s small quartet, which is a combination of an oboe concert, a quadro sonata and a pre-classical quartet.
Finally, Purcell remains, for us, the master of balancing ‘soft’ and loud, folky and academic, intimate and extravagant…his Fantasias, Hornpipes and Chaconnes will be guiding you through the concert.
Programme
-H. Purcell: Hornpipe from ‘King Arthur’ Z.628 || March & Rondeau from ‘The Old Bachelor’ Z.607 || Fantasia in 4 parts in C minor Z.738
-J. G. Graun: Trio in D for oboe d’amore, horn and continuo IKG83 (andante || allegro || largo || minuetto)

-J. S. Bach: Sonata from cantata BWV 182

TUNED STORIES
What were composers whistling under the shower? music by Telemann, Mozart, Haydn, Bartok, Bach… and more!
More info
Have you ever asked yourself the question, how did a composer come up with that tune?
Do they have a way of creating this melody?
Does the composer use a special technique or formula to create the main melody which they know is going to work?
Why are some tunes stuck in our heads and more memorable than others?
Is it a special recipe the composer has?
Or have they been secretly stealing from other pieces of theirs, or other artists?
What about the famous copyright court cases we hear about?
One common inspiration we have found in our repertoire has been the local area – for example melodies sung during hard labour, on the farm or at sea, or at church. Each composer has a different approach to how they hear, process and develop this musical input. In this programme we conjure a different scene for each piece; some have a clear link, such as Haydn’s Hungarian Rondò, and Bartok’s transylvanian folk melodies; others have a more general connection, like Bach’s French dances and Chopin’s waltzes. Personal hygiene and frequency of washing aside, we wonder: what were our composers whistling in the shower?

Song’s Texts
Misyats’ na Nebi
The Crescent in the Sky
The moon’s in the heavens, the stars all are
sparkling,
On the sea there floats a boat.
In that boat, a maiden sings sweetly,
A young Kozak hears it – his heart is breaking.
The song is so lovely, the song is endearing,
It’s all about loving, it’s all about love
How we had loved, and how we had parted,
And now come together forever again.
O those eyes, those eyes, the eyes of a maiden,
Dark, like the night, and bright, like the day!
Your dear eyes have taught me to weep,
Where have you learned to mislead people so?
Music for a While
Music for a while
Shall all your cares beguile.
Wond’ring how your pains were eas’d
And disdaining to be pleas’d
Till Alecto free the dead
From their eternal bands,
Till the snakes drop from her head,
Oj u haju, pry Dunaju
In the Grove by the Danube
Oh in the grove, by the Danube,
A nightingale chatters,
To all the birds of his flock
To his nest, he’s calling.
Oh, chirp – chirp and chirp – chirp – chirp
A nightingale chatters,
To all the birds of his flock
To his nest, he’s calling.
Oh in the grove, by the Danube,
There is music playing
The bass drones, the fiddle’s crying,
There my beloved is merry.
Oh in the grove, by the Danube,
I know my fate, here I stand all alone
Crying, mourning, and yet wailing
My beloved for you.
Oh, chirp – chirp and chirp – chirp – chirp
A nightingale chatters,
To all the birds of his flock
To his nest, he’s calling

An Introduction to Haydn & Time
then-
Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden.

But nothing gives of itself more naturally than Time:
whether they wish to or not, all things possess it.
Since therefore the usurer sells that which is the natural property of all creatures,
he wrongs them all, even the stones, so that even if men were to remain silent in front of usurers,
the stones would cry out if they could

more info
Join us as we look through the keyhole of music into the life and times of Mr and Mrs Danzi-Lebrun. Through their partnership of life and composition, they brought a sense of divine melody and song all across Europe. Signora Lebrun was best known as a soprano with extraordinary coloratura abilities, however perhaps equally if not more unusual was the fact that (as a woman composer) she had published in 1780, two sets of violin sonatas. We complete the programme with music by a ‘friends’ of the Lebruns, Mozart and Druschetzky.

Eine Kleine Tortemusik
TRIO NOTTURNO
music by Molino, Beethoven, Hoffmeister, Stott, Giuliani
More info
Trio Notturno presents a recital of music for the delectable combination: flute, viola and guitar. Popular in the Viennese salons of the early 19th century, this genre inspired works by Diabelli and
Molino, as well as arrangements of Beethoven and Schubert by Matiegka Virtuosic passages for all three instruments contrast with lyrical melodies and lively instrumental dialogue. Trio Notturno combines intimate chamber music with spoken poetry of the period, following a practice which was in vogue at that time. Their programme includes a new work composed for them in the autumn of 2022, based on a poem by Alexander Pushkin.
